Toronto Urban Aboriginal Strategy Management Committee Call for New Members and Nominations Package 2010 – 2011
The Toronto Urban Aboriginal Strategy Management Committee (TUMC) is now accepting nominations for Steering Committee Members. About the Urban Aboriginal Strategy
The Urban Aboriginal Strategy (UAS) provides long-term investments to support urban Aboriginal communities by promoting self-reliance and increasing life choices for Aboriginal people living in urban centres. Investments will be made with the aim of promoting increased urban Aboriginal participation in the economy and must address one of the three following three priority areas: 1. Improving life skills; 2. Promoting job training, skills and entrepreneurship; and, 3. Supporting Aboriginal women, children and families. Toronto UAS Management Committee (TUMC) Mandate The Toronto Urban Aboriginal Strategy Management Committee will identify, promote and advance opportunities to close the gap in life chances (opportunities for social advancement and economic development) for Urban Aboriginal people in Toronto by: · Identifying local priorities · Developing and implementing the TUAS Community Plan · Actively engaging the diverse Aboriginal Community for feedback, using the TUAS Community Plan · Developing Partnerships with all three levels of Government, the private and non-profit sectors · Funding projects that meet the priorities identified in the TUAS Community Plan · Promote and raise awareness of the UAS in Toronto · Reviewing and updating the Terms of Reference on a bi-annual basis, as needed Eligibility Requirements
We are looking for aboriginal community members who are: • Of First Nations, Inuit, Métis, or Non-status Indian heritage; • Of any age (youth nominees must be a minimum of 18 years of age); • Active community members and permanent residents of Toronto; • Interested in serving a 2 year term as a Steering Committee Member for Toronto UAS. Desirable Skills and Expertise ARTS – Artists, performers, writers, architects BUSINESS & COMMERCE – Business, finance, commerce, entrepreneurs CULTURE, HERITAGE & SPIRITUALITY – Elders, spiritual leaders, First Nations, Inuit, Métis languages EDUCATION – Teachers, trainers, professors, researchers, scientists ENVIRONMENT & NATURAL RESOURCES – Agriculture, energy HEALTH – Doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, traditional healers LAW & JUSTICE – Lawyers, paralegals, court workers MEDIA & COMMUNICATION – Journalism, television, radio, newspaper, magazines POLITICS – Community leaders, counselors PUBLIC SERVICE –Social services, housing, public works, human resources SPORTS – Athletes, coaches TECHNOLOGY & TRADES – Engineers, technologists, computer sciences YOUTH – Youth leaders, students (High school/Post-secondary) etc. Expressions of Interest
